Supreme Court Upholds Health Care Reform,
Democrats Denounce GOP Political Agenda

MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
Yesterday’s Supreme Court decision upholding the Affordable Care Act was a victory for all Americans. This landmark legislation is putting health care decisions in the hands of Americans rather than insurance companies. Millions are already benefitting from this legislation: insurance companies can no longer discriminate against those with pre-existing conditions, young adults can stay on their parents health care plan until age 26, and the prescription drug ‘donut hole’ is closing. It’s disappointing Republicans have scheduled yet another a vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act, without any plan to replace it with an alternative so that Americans can keep the benefits they’re already receiving. Instead of continuing to be the party of ‘no,’ I hope Republicans will work with us as we continue to implement the Affordable Care Act so that health care is affordable and accessible for all Americans.
Yesterday the House took unprecedented action by holding a Cabinet official in contempt for the first time in history. This was a blatantly political, partisan stunt that Republicans rushed to the House Floor without making any attempt to reach an agreement to avoid such a vote. It continued Republicans’ pattern of choosing confrontation over consensus on nearly every issue we have address. And it wasted time that should have been spent working to create jobs. I was proud to join fellow House Democrats in a walkout in protest of this unprecedented vote.
Today the House passed a long-term highway bill that gives businesses and our infrastructure sector the certainty it needs to grow and create jobs. Although this agreement should have been reached many weeks earlier, Republicans wasted time and put jobs at risk. The bill that passed today also included a measure to prevent 7.4 million students from seeing their student loan interest rates double.
I hope you all have a happy 4th of July spent with family and friends.
Sincerely yours,

STENY H. HOYER
