House Democrats Statement on Signing of U.S.-Afghanistan Strategic Partnership Agreement
Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Obama Administration announced the signing of the U.S-Afghanistan Strategic Partnership Agreement:
"Our men and women in uniform continue to carry out their mission in Afghanistan with distinction and courage. Because of their service and sacrifice, Al Qaeda and the Taliban are seriously weakened and on the run, and the Afghan people have been able to take significant steps toward assuming control over their own security. Tonight, the President reiterated his commitment to ending our combat mission in 2014, in accordance with our previous agreement with the Afghan government, and pledged American assistance as Afghans continue the work of building free institutions of government and developing their economy.
"One year after the death of Osama Bin Laden, I am encouraged that President Obama was able to reach an agreement with President Karzai outlining the non-combat role we can play helping Afghans achieve stability and work toward new opportunities in the years ahead.”
