Senate votes to extend jobless benefits

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Responding to the worsening economic climate, the Senate voted overwhelmingly Thursday in favor of a measure to extend unemployment benefits by at least seven weeks in every state.

The bill calls for benefits to be extended by 13 weeks in states with an unemployment rate of at least 6 percent.

President George W. Bush announced earlier Thursday that he will sign the bill, which was approved by the House in October. In a written statement, White House press secretary Dana Perino said Bush will sign the legislation “because of the tight job market.”

In most states, unemployment benefits are paid for a maximum of 26 weeks.
