Obama urges governors to spend money on education

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - President Barack Obama on Monday urged the nation's governors to spend more money on education, saying there was nothing more critical to the long-term performance of the economy. "The countries who out-educate us today will out-compete us tomorrow," Obama told the governors at a meeting at the White House. "The fact is too many states are making cuts to education that I believe are simply too big," he said. Over the past four years, over 250,000 teachers have been laid-off, and they must be quickly returned to the classroom, the president said. In addition, governors must make college a higher priority in their budgets. More than 40 states have cut funding for higher education in the past year, Obama said. This is pushing up tuition at public colleges, he noted.
