Hoyer Responds to Announcement of Economic Recession

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding the National Bureau of Economic Research announcement that the U.S. economy has been in a recession since December 2007:

"Today the National Bureau of Economic Research announced that the U.S. economy has been in a recession since December 2007--but that will not come as a surprise to millions of Americans. With 1.2 million jobs lost so far this year, the most important question is how we can get out of this recession.

"That is why Congress must pass economic recovery legislation. Such legislation should include job-creating infrastructure projects and aid to states forced to cut vital services. Economic recovery legislation is at the top of the Democratic Congress's agenda, and if President Bush continues to resist action, we will ensure that President-elect Obama is able to sign legislation quickly after being sworn in."
