China celebrates 30 years of economic reform
Posted: 04:07 AM ET
BEIJING, China (CNN) — China’s president pledged Thursday to continue the economic reforms that have transformed the once poverty-riddled nation into an industrial powerhouse.

“Standing still and regressing will lead only to a dead end,” President Hu Jintao told a crowd of 6,000 on the 30th anniversary of the Chinese government’s decision to reform the nation’s economy and open it up to the outside world. The speech was given at the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing.

Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping was the architect of the reform movement, which was first implemented at a meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on December 18, 1978.
