(CNN) — The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda is expected to issue a verdict Thursday in the case against the alleged mastermind of the genocide that took place in the African nation in 1994.

Theoneste Bagosora, a colonel in the Rwandan army, is accused of ordering Hutu militia to slaughter rival Tutsis during a 100-day spree of violence that left an estimated 800,000 people dead. Prosecutors said he was a key figure in drawing up the plan.

The killings began after a mysterious plane crash on April 6, 1994, that killed the presidents of Rwanda and neighboring Burundi.
