Diplomats call for Gaza cease-fire

(CNN) — Members of the Middle East quartet, including the United States and Russia, conferred by telephone Tuesday on the crisis in Gaza and southern Israel, and called for an “immediate cease-fire,” the United Nations said.

“They called on all parties to address the serious humanitarian and economic needs in Gaza and to take necessary measures to ensure the continuous provision of humanitarian supplies,” the United Nations said.

The quartet is comprised of the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations. The U.S. State Department said Rice participated in a “lengthy” conference call with the quartet about the violence in Gaza and southern Israel.
