ROME, Italy (CNN) — Pope Benedict XVI prayed Thursday for peace in Gaza in a New Year’s Day message from the Vatican.
“To Mary we entrust our profound desire to live in peace that rises from
the heart of the great majority of the Israeli and Palestinian population, once again jeopardized by the massive outbreak of violence in the Gaza Strip in response to other violence,” the pope said in a Thursday morning Mass.
Thursday marked the sixth day of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, a
bombardment Israel said was in response to Palestinian militants firing rockets into Israel.
