MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER« Thread Started on Dec 9, 2007, 12:12am » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER Yesterday, the House passed an historic energy bill that declares our independence from foreign oil. The Energy Independence and Security Act calls for an increase in fuel efficiency for the first time in 32 years by raising fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2020. We are also adding incentives to increase production of bio-fuels, and setting new energy efficiency standards for buildings, lighting, and appliances. This legislation also requires that 15% of our electricity come from renewable sources. These provisions are vital to strengthening our national security, decreasing energy costs, growing the economy and creating new jobs, and beginning to reduce global warming.I am disappointed that Senate Republicans chose to block consideration of this responsible, bipartisan energy bill this morning. This bill had the support of a wide range of groups, including environmental, business, labor, and farm groups. I remain hopeful that we will be able to work together to pass a bill that focuses on the future and paves the way to a brighter future of energy independence for our nation.Next week, the House will take up the Intelligence Authorization conference report and the Department of Defense Authorization conference report. We are also working hard to offer a compromise to the President in order to fund the priorities of the American people in a fiscally responsible manner, and will likely address other pending business.Sincerely yours,STENY H. HOYER
