One Year Later, Democratic-Led Congress« Thread Started on Nov 2, 2007, 4:58am » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------One Year Later, Democratic-Led CongressIs Leading Nation in a New Direction--------------------------------------------------------------------------------WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) spoke this morning at an event with House Democrats highlighting the accomplishments of the 110th New Direction Congress. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:“Good morning – and welcome.“One year ago, the American people looked at Congress, and here’s what they saw: They saw a rubber-stamp for the Bush Administration. They saw complacency, corruption and coverup. They saw an institution failing to address their priorities.“Those days are long over – because the American people hoped for, prayed for and then chose a New Direction for our great nation.“Today, one year later, the Democratic majorities in Congress are delivering on our promise to lead this nation in a new direction – as our speakers today will attest.“We have passed legislation that strengthens our national security, that grows our economy and makes us more competitive, that addresses the needs of our families and communities, that preserves our planet and weans us from our dependence on foreign oil, and that restores accountable, open and transparent government.“Our Republican colleague Ray LaHood even remarked a few months ago: 'They [Democrats] can send their Members home crowing about their accomplishments, and they’ve done it in a bipartisan way, which is exactly what they promised to do.'“Our record of achievement includes more than 90 pieces of major legislation, nearly 70 percent of which passed with bipartisan support.“But let no one be mistaken: This event is not a celebration. No, it is a reaffirmation of our pledge to the American people: We can, we will, we must continue to fight for them.“And, we recognize that our work is not finished; that this Do-Something New Direction Congress has been blocked too often by a Do-Nothing President, and his Republican Congressional accomplices.“On stems cells.“On funding for education, health care for our veterans and men and women in uniform, environmental clean up, public safety and national security.“On providing health care to 10 million low-income American children.“And, the President has consistently refused to follow the Congress’s lead to change his flawed and failing direction in Iraq.“Today, we commit to you, the American people, that Democrats will never stop fighting for your priorities – and for a greater America.“And, now it is my honor to introduce the woman who is leading us in this charge, our leader, the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi.” ###
