Majority Leader Congratulates Israel on Being Chosen to Chair a UN Committee« Thread Started on Oct 15, 2007, 6:11pm » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Majority Leader Congratulates Israel on Being Chosen to Chair a UN Committee --------------------------------------------------------------------------------WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer released the following statement today after the House passed, by voice vote, H.Res. 624, bipartisan legislation introduced by Alcee Hastings (D-FL) congratulating the State of Israel on chairing a United Nations committee for the first time in history: “I think it is only fitting that the House of Representatives go on the record congratulating our steadfast ally, the state of Israel, for being chosen to chair a United Nations committee – the Committee on Program and Coordination. “While Israel sits on several important committees and representatives from Israel have served as deputy chairs in the United Nations, this is the first time in history that Israel will chair a UN committee. “Without doubt, this is an important step for Israel but also for the Member-states of the United Nations, which too often have subjected Israel to unjustified one-sided attacks and unfair vilification. It is long past time that Israel chair a UN committee and receive the respect it deserves at the UN.” ###
