That corruption came to a head during the 2003 primaries in East Chicago and Schererville, where there was widespread proof of fraud. It is important for county residents to understand that Lake County election officials didn't have a hand in the wrongdoing. In fact, the chairmen of the county's two major political parties -- Republican John Curley and the late Democrat Stephen Stiglich -- took the initiative to fix the system to make it extremely difficult to manipulate an election through fraudulent absentee balloting. Those officials conducted a "purge" of registrations, resulting in the elimination of more than 100,000 names from the registration rolls. Because of all the work that has gone into securing Lake County's system, it was disheartening last week to learn that a contractor hired by Secretary of State Todd Rokita had tampered with some of the votes cast in the county. As county officials were entering absentee ballot information from the May primary into the data base, they found the intrusion from downstate. Local officials were recording 58 absentee ballots that had been rejected, only to find the database indicated they had been accepted.
