Don't blame Democrats for approval of war bill « Thread Started on Jun 1, 2007, 5:27pm » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Don't blame Democrats for approval of war bill By Tom Beckfeld, Big Lake read at source> http://www.sctimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar ... 1Published: June 01. 2007 12:30AM STORY CHAT (128) REGISTER HERE NOW TOOLS EMAIL PRINT BUY PHOTOS SET TEXT SIZE The Iraq funding bill was an example of Congress voting for a bad bill for good reasons. My progressive friends are appalled that Democrats such as Amy Klobuchar and Tim Walz could support this bill. And my Republican friends point out a supposed hypocrisy in this vote. But after talking with the folks in the Walz staff, I came to realize what a painful decision this was for them. The Democrats who voted for this bill did so because they believed that the president would not change course even if funding was cut off.To an Iraq war veteran such as Walz, this was unacceptable. He and the other Democrats who ended up voting for this bill could not leave our troops in Iraq without the funding needed to support their effort. The same could not be said for the president and many Republicans such as our own Michele Bachmann. They were playing a game of chicken with our troops' lives. Thankfully the Democrats came to the conclusion that the stakes were too high and our troops' lives meant more to them than the political game this war has become.
