Embezzlement and exploitation of Iraq must stop« Thread Started on May 2, 2007, 12:53am » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------The president wants a blank check. The Congress is not going to give it to himPOSTED: 10:06 p.m. EDT, May 1, 2007 read at source> http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/05/01/ ... WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Four years to the day after standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier and declaring "major combat operations" in Iraq were over, President Bush on Tuesday vetoed a war-spending bill that calls for the start of a withdrawal of American combat troops from the conflict. "It makes no sense to tell the enemy when you plan to start withdrawing. All the terrorists would have to do is mark their calendars. ... Setting a deadline for withdrawal is setting a date for failure, and that would be irresponsible," Bush said in a televised address after the veto."I recognize that many Democrats saw this bill as an opportunity to make a political statement about their opposition to the war," Bush said. "They've sent their message, and now it is time to put politics behind us and support our troops with the funds they need." (Watch Bush explain why he vetoed the bill ) The president invited the congressional leadership to the White House on Wednesday to discuss a compromise. After the speech, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, said the ball was now in Bush's court."Now he has an obligation to explain his plan to responsibly end this war," Reid said. "If the president thinks (that) by vetoing this bill he'll stop us from working to change the direction of the war in Iraq, he is mistaken," Reid added.Standing beside Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, said: "The president wants a blank check. The Congress is not going to give it to him." -editorial commentary:America needs to get out of iraq and setting a timetable sets a benchmark to gauge success and goal of diplomatic success and allows changes to allow a parallel process for the international community to become involved in the process. The democratic party is right. To set an open ended blank cheque is irresponsible and the administrations track record of the past several years in all areas of the administration of government processes points to the irresponsibility and credibility of this adminstration. The America people have the right to demand the withdrawal of the troops from iraq. This war is a sham, it was started on fraud and trickery and the troops should not be subjected to continue to participate or sacrifice any further in this futile fabrication and manipulation of events.America should withdraw its troops while starting a parallel process of diplomacy involving the entire world community. This is not surrender. The American people will succeed by setting benchmarks and involving the entire world community in an honorable and integrated process. The world community is equally responsible in allowing the administration to invade Iraq in an illegal war and shares the responsibility for repairing the damage caused to the people of this nation. A timetable for withdrawal doesnt need to mean the complete and absolute withdrawal from Iraq ..that would also be irresponsible. The administration's rhetoric of democrat's 'surrender' is plainly that false propaganda and rhetoric.America can still win by coordinating a global effort and negotiating a global effort and implementing a policing/training infrastructure with the cooperation of other world powers to exit only when the people of Iraq are confident that they are able to provide the security of their people and nation, are provided the proper reparation and recourse of the damage caused to their nation's infrastructure and the continued assistance and support of the global community to bring stability, peace and security to this country and the region.America can win by ensuring the success of this effort with the goal being the success of a stable and democratic Iraq with a global effort in realizing the peaceful cooperation and reconstruction of that nation with the assistance of the entire world community. This is not surrender, this is the right thing to do.
