Democrats write to Gonzales on 'Ninth fired US Attorney' Michael Roston« Thread Started on May 16, 2007, 5:14am » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Democrats write to Gonzales on 'Ninth fired US Attorney' Michael RostonPublished: Tuesday May 15, 2007 read at source> http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Democrats ... 0515.htmlA group of House Democrats sent a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales seeking more details on the resignation from office of former US Attorney Todd Graves, who some in Congress have flagged as the ninth fired US Attorney.House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), along with Reps. Linda Sánchez (D-CA) and Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), sent the letter to Gonzales Tuesday, seeking further information on Graves' resignation as the US Attorney for the Western District of Missouri. The three representatives suggested that Gonzales had contradicted information on Graves' removal from office in his testimony before the committee last Thursday by suggesting that Graves was not fired on account of his opposition to a voter fraud prosecution in Missouri pushed by the Justice Department."There are disturbing indications that the decision to fire Mr. Graves was related to his disagreement with a voter fraud lawsuit pushed by Mr. [Bradley] Schlozman, the very person eventually named by you to succeed Mr. Graves as an interim U.S. Attorney. Notwithstanding your assertions, our review indicates that the district court decision dismissing that lawsuit focused on much more than the procedural defect of naming the wrong defendant," they wrote. The Congress members sought an explanation of the facts regarding Graves' termination and replacement, the identification of all current and former Department employees with information on this issue so that they may be interviewed, and information on whether any other United States Attorneys were terminated or asked to resign during President Bush's second term. The Attorney General in a press conference Tuesday suggested that there was no White House effort to push voter fraud prosecutions."I'm not aware of any concentrated effort by the White House to promote a voter fraud prosecution campaign," he said. "There were concerns raised by -- Mr. Rove, for example, raised with me concerns about voter fraud prosecutions in three jurisdictions."Gonzales went on to say that voter fraud prosecutions should continue, but with care. "It needs to be done in a way that doesn't chill or discourage voter participation on Election Day, and we have guidance with respect to that. But again, voter fraud is stealing," he argued. "Like we pursue other crimes, we did so in this case."
