SecID=2The state Senate committee approved the bill unanimously. RALEIGH -- A state Senate committee has approved a bill stemming from the Jim Black scandal. The proposal would forfeit pensions for elected officials who are convicted of public corruption or election fraud felonies.Without a single voice of concern, the public corruption bill passed thecommittee with a unanimous vote."It will stop benefits of people who are guilty of public corruption or election fraud and I think, as I've said, the public's money should not be diverted by this kind of thing," Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand said.Specifically, the bill forfeits pensions of any elected official who is convicted of public corruption or election fraud felonies. If this bill does become law, it would not affect anything in the past. It starts July 1, 2007 and affects only money accrued after that date.
