America is a peace-loving nation« Thread Started on Apr 27, 2007, 10:19am » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Letters to the EditorFriday April 27, 2007April 27, 2007Americans voted the Democrats in because they want out of Iraqread at source> http://www.dailymail.com/story/Opinion/ ... -27-2007/I read the column by Daily Mail Editorial Page Editor Johanna Maurice in the April 14 Saturday Gazette-Mail, "Americans can't take a powder."She couldn't be more wrong. Terrorism has and probably will always exist. As long as there are religious fanatics, power-seeking idiots and those who follow extreme causes, terrorism will exist. Her listing of separate despicable acts and occurrences prove it.Bush ignored the efforts and advice of the previous administration on security, and America's defenses were down when the terrorists attacked us on Sept. 11. Rather than establishing a policy to actively prepare and protect our country, this administration used that event as an opportunity to lead us to a misguided venture into Iraq, the result of which has sparked a new round of hatred of America and promoted the cause of radical Islam worldwide.Again, Maurice's six bullet points provide the evidence.George W. Bush has sacrificed our dedicated, wonderful soldiers for an ill-conceived cause that has more to do with exercising power than the protection of our country. "King George" could put thousands more troops in Iraq and the outcome would be the same. The incidents recounted in Maurice's column reinforce the fact that this administration led our country into a war with no plan to "win," as Republicans like to say.Bush has confirmed that he will not finish the war he started. In the interim, he will continue to promote a philosophy of force to resolve all world issues and to avoid diplomacy to reconcile differences. We need to quell the storm, not seed the clouds as the Bush administration has done. To live in a peaceful world, people need to communicate, to negotiate, to respect and to find good in one another. Like Bush, Maurice wants to leave the disaster he created for the next administration to resolve. She, too, wants the Democrats to answer for the mistakes of the Bush White House.Democrats won a majority in the House and Senate last November because they express the ideas of the American majority. Democrats will not support a misguided, ill-conceived, poorly planned, unnecessary invasion of Iraq. A Democrat will be elected to the presidency in 2008. This will happen not because of a "cravenly cultivated hatred for George W. Bush;" it will happen because basically America is a peace-loving nation.
