Need to Protect Voters' Rights« Thread Started on Nov 14, 2006, 3:21pm » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ohio Voter ID Restraining Order A Reminder of the Need to Protect Voters' RightsOctober 30, 2006 source> http://www.democrats.org/a/2006/10/ohio ... d_r.phpDNC Launches Online Resource Center for Voters' Rights: www.democrats.org/voterprotection A day after a U.S. District Court issued a temporary restraining order suspending the Voter Identification requirements for absentee voting in Ohio, Republican Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell flip-flopped and allowed an appeal to be filed, adding further confusion to the November 7th elections. [Columbus Dispatch, 10/27/06] The decision yesterday puts a stop to the disparate application of parts of Ohio's Election law allowing voters to cast absentee ballots without fear that they are illegally being disenfranchised. The Democratic Party advocates a voting process that is accessible and inclusive of all eligible voters, and that promotes participation, not confusion. The temporary restraining order and the potential appeal in Ohio are reminders that many Americans this November will be facing potential burdens, new voting technology for the first time, and confusing laws designed to make it harder for them to cast their ballots. That's why leading up to Election Day, the Democratic National Committee has implemented a 50 state voter protection strategy to ensure that Election Day is a fair and open process. As part of that expansive effort, the DNC is today launching its voter protection online resource center at www.democrats.org/voterprotection. important for voters to understand their rights, and to feel ownership in the political process," said Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean in announcing the online resource center. "Ken Blackwell and Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro's decision to appeal unfortunately puts them on the side of chaos and confusion, not on the side of the voters, many of whom have already experienced problems in early absentee voting. Democrats are committed to not only protecting our most fundamental right to vote but also to encouraging active civic participation in our democracy by all eligible voters and restoring the American people's confidence in the electoral process."Through the website, voters can go online across the country to get the latest up-to-date information about their rights on Election Day and learn more about the DNC's national voter protection hotline, 1-888- DEM-VOTE. The site also includes information and tools to help provide voters with information on using absentee ballots in their states, as well as downloadable flyers and brochures to share vital information with friends and family. In addition to the establishment of a national voter protection hotline and the placement of election protection staff in key states, the DNC is implementing a comprehensive series of efforts aimed at helping Americans register to vote, learn how and where to cast their ballot, and provide assistance in overcoming Republican-led efforts to suppress voter turnout for the November elections."Every eligible voter deserves the right to cast his or her vote and have that vote counted. That is why Democrats are working hard every single day to protect the right of the American people to participate in our democracy," concluded Dean, "and it's the reason we have the most expansive and comprehensive Election Protection program taking place in all 50 states for the first time ever. In Ohio and across the country, voters should head to the polls with confidence that they will be able to vote and that their votes will be counted."The following are key elements of the national Democratic voter protection strategy for 2006: NATIONAL VOTER PROTECTION HOTLINE: The DNC established the national 1-888-DEM-VOTE hotline so voters all across the country can get information about how and where to vote and to report problems at the polls on Election Day;PROVIDING ELECTION PROTECTION STAFF: National Democrats will place election protection staff in 18 key states and provide training and step-by-step Election Protection manuals to other states.RECRUITING LEGAL ASSISTANCE ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY: The National Lawyers Council is recruiting 7,500 pro-bono lawyers and law students to support the DNC's election protection program. These lawyers will be placed in precincts to augment voter protection efforts at every level-including not just statewide office and Congressional races, but local and county races as well. These offices from state representatives to county sheriffs and judges will have a profound impact on the lives of real citizens throughout the year.ADVANCING LEGISLATION FOR VERIFIED VOTING: The DNC will continue working with Congressional leaders, grassroots activists and state parties to build support for federal legislation to mandate a verified voting paper trail for voting machines that has been proven as the best method of securing votes.FILING LITIGATION TO BLOCK LEGISLATION: The DNC will work with state parties to file litigation to prevent imposition of egregious photo ID and other Republican sponsored legislation that disenfranchise voters. This follows the successful partnership the DNC has undertaken with state parties pursuing legal challenges to, for example, Indiana's voter ID law and to the effort to investigate the criminal phone-jamming scheme in New Hampshire.MONITORING STATE LEGISLATION: The National Lawyers Council and the Voting Rights Institute will continue to meet with top election law attorneys and monitor state legislative initiatives that have the potential to dilute the voting rights of key constituency voters. They are also updating manuals from the last election cycle to reflect new changes in election laws across the country.
