Is it time to hit 'mission abort' in Iraq?« Thread Started on Oct 19, 2006, 9:15am » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Is it time to hit 'mission abort' in Iraq?POSTED: 1138 GMT (1938 HKT), October 19, 2006 By Simon Hooper for CNNread at source: http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast ... x.html(CNN) -- In May 2003 U.S. President George W. Bush touched down on the deck of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln in a jet fighter inscribed with the words "Commander in Chief" on the cockpit.Standing underneath a banner reading "Mission Accomplished," he declared the U.S. and its allies had "prevailed" in Iraq.Almost three-and-a-half years later, with Iraq seemingly locked in a perpetual cycle of violence, Bush is facing growing calls from military leaders and his own political advisors to hit the "mission abort" button instead. In August John Abizaid, commander of the U.S. Central Command in Iraq, told a Senate committee Iraq was heading towards "civil war."This month the chief of the British armed forces, General Sir Richard Dannatt, suggested the presence of allied troops was "exacerbating" security problems in Iraq.Meanwhile a leaked copy of a report by the Congress-appointed Iraq Study Group, chaired by James Baker, the former Secretary of State to George Bush Senior, this week indicated its recommendations could include the large-scale withdrawal of American troops and possibly inviting Iran and Syria -- two countries previously denounced by Bush -- to help in stabilizing the country. But the most damaging blow to Bush's presidency may yet be dealt by the American public itself. With mid-term elections next month, the president's popularity ratings are at an all-time low. A CNN poll this week found that 64 percent of Americans now believe going to war was a mistake. Iraq did not attack america on 9/11. it did not possess wmd's and was complying will the IAEA. the war should not have started. bush as commander in chief broke international laws to pursue an illegal war against the will of the american public. the president and his staff are there to serve the democratic will of the people, not dictate to americans that he is gonna do what he wants and dictate his policy when he wants because he was successful in infiltrating the federal government like a hostile corporate takeover. the brave and honorable members of the armed services, the soldiers of america should never have been ordered to engage in military hostilities against the sovereign nation of iraq solely for the purpose of capturing saddam. the thousands of soldiers should never have been used recklessly as pawns to avenge a previous republican administration vendetta. this was wrong . this must be acknowledged and america will need to apologize to iraq and the world community and withdrawing the troops will be the first step in providing the proper reparations to that nation. the international community will then have an opportunity to step up and assist the people of iraq and many opportunity will present themselves where good americans too will be able to step and and provide assistance in a wide range of areas. withdraw the troops. america can never win anything without doing the right thing. it is not a loss by any means. america will be able to demonstrate its strength and honor in other ways, the first step is to acknowledge that the war of aggression against the people and citizens of iraq was a mistake and taking steps to amend that error. to stay there and continue an aggressive, hostile and violent stance to continue until all terrorists or combatants of iraq who are fighting for their own dignity and honor for their families and their nations will only create a worst loss for america. there cannot be a victory of the war when the war was started based on lies and false fabrications. the commander in chief must cease and desist military engagements in iraq and let the international community take its course
