Driven by a friend, McGowan, 69, arrived at the Arthur Cromarty Criminal Court Complex in Riverhead to surrender shortly before noon. He walked into the courthouse in a steady rain, shielded by a tan and green golf umbrella and wearing a windbreaker over a white T-shirt and blue nylon pants with white stripes. At the door, McGowan was joined by his attorney, Raymond Perini. Sentenced May 4 to 90 days in jail, 420 hours of community service and five years' probation for taking campaign kickbacks and misusing campaign funds, McGowan appeared again before Acting Supreme Court Justice Michael Mullen after getting an extra week to deal with what Mullen termed "medical problems."
