Homeless and Low Income Voter Registration Week « Thread Started on Sept 24, 2004, 6:32pm » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Homeless and Low Income Voter Registration Week The U.S. Constitution provides that American citizens, without regards to property ownership, have the right to vote. Many homeless people are qualified to vote but are unable to register. Thirty states require that persons have a mailing address in order to register. While 48 states claim that citizens can register if they live in a shelter or on the streets, only 17 states have written policies and 24 have verbal policies to support the claim. Currently, only 10 states have laws expressly giving homeless people the right to vote (Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Nebraska, Oregon, and West Virginia). The National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Low Income Housing Coalition are co-sponsoring events encouraging homeless and low-income voter registration and civic participation the week of September 26 through October 2. If you are interested in organizing or participating in voter registration or civic events related to the voting rights of homeless persons, contact Michael Stoops at the National Coalition for the Homeless (mstoops@nationalhomeless.org) or Katie Fisher at National Low Income Housing Coalition (Katie@nlihc.org).VolunteerWe need your help to achieve these goals and others. If you are interested in being a part of the DNC's Voting Rights Institute voter protection team please sign up by filling out our volunteer form.Your efforts will ensure that everyone who is eligible to vote will have their vote count.
