A Message from Donna BrazileDear America,On July 26, the 2004 Democratic National Convention will convene in Boston and more than 15,000 people will descend upon the city to show our collective strength, raise our voices, and nominate the next President and Vice President of the United States.By working together, there is more we can do to help elect Democrats throughout the country. It is a critical opportunity to prepare ourselves for the battle that lies ahead -- perhaps the most important political battle of our time.Throughout Convention week, Democratic GAIN will host the largest and most comprehensive training program in the Party's history. The trainings will be open at no cost to all who wish to attend. If you are going to be in Boston for the convention, register today by visiting www.democraticgain.org, or to contact GAIN directly at 202-863-4246 or conventiontraining@democraticgain.org with questions. If you know anyone else who will be in Boston, please pass this email on to them, as well.I look forward to seeing you in Boston, fighting hard and smart this fall, and celebrating with you November 2.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Florida Flawed Felon-Voter List Abandoned« Thread Started on Jul 21, 2004, 11:17pm » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Florida Flawed Felon-Voter List AbandonedActing under extreme pressure, Florida election officials admitted an enormous mistake on July 10 and abandoned the controversial list being used to remove purported convicted felons from the voter rolls. After defending the list against mounting criticism following the 2000 presidential election, the state did an about-face when it was revealed that the database failed to capture most felons who classified themselves as Hispanic.Ralph G. Neas, president of the People for the American Way Foundation, who was co-counsel in a lawsuit challenging an earlier 2000 purge list asserted "This smells to high heaven. It strains credulity to think that Hispanics were somehow left off the list, while African Americans remained on the list." In Florida, the majority of Hispanics register Republican, while more than 90 percent of Florida's nearly one million African American voters register Democrat. As a result of the state's forced decision to abandon its flawed felon-voter list, individual county election supervisors in Florida are charged with creating their own system of removing ineligible voters. During the week prior to July 10, the Miami Herald reported that more than 2,100 Florida voters (many of them African American Democrats) were on the list even though their civil rights had been formally restored by the state, and 1,600 of those cases involved felons who won clemency after they registered to vote. Of the 47,763 potentially ineligible voters, the Miami Herald reported that 59 percent were Democrats, 19 percent were Republicans and 22 percent were classified "other". Florida is one of six states that continue to ban felons from voting after they have completed their sentence unless they expressly request reinstatement of their voting rights.Make certain that you are registered to vote. Before you can make your voice heard on Election Day you must register to vote. The rules for registering are different for every state so check with your local elections board to find out the rules that apply in your area. There are dozens of organizations registering voters, but if it isn't done properly your name may not make it onto the rolls come Election Day. In order to prevent that, you must take special care to ensure that you are properly registered. There are seven things you can do to make certain that you are registered on Election Day:- Register now so that if there are any problems, you will have time to fix them. - Read and follow the registration instructions carefully. If you don't understand the instructions ask for help. - Provide valid ID when you register. - Sign your registration the way you sign any important documents. - Follow up with your local board of elections to make sure you are in fact registered to vote. - Know your polling location before Election Day. - Complain to any and everyone if you are not registered or your concerns are not addressed. If you have not registered to vote do so now and take the first step to being counted. click here> http://electionimpact.votenet.com/dnc/
