June 19 marks the celebration of the ending of slavery in America« Thread Started on Jun 16, 2004, 8:28pm »--------------------------------------------------------------------------------June 19 marks the annual celebration of the ending of slavery in America. It was on June 19, 1865 that Union Soldiers arrived at Galveston, Texas with news that slaves were free, thus ending the last standing bastion of slavery. The news came two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation."The Democratic Party is proud to recognize Juneteenth and the significance it holds for millions across the country," said DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe. "At the heart of Juneteenth is a moving celebration of freedom that should touch the heart of every American. Our appreciation for freedom will only grow as more Americans become aware of the story of Juneteenth."Visit http://www.Juneteenth.com to learn more about Juneteenth and to find celebrations near you.
