Insider-trading ban bill advances in Senate
from MarketWatch.com - MarketPulse
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Legislation seeking to allow regulators to prosecute members of Congress for insider trading passed a key procedural hurdle late Monday in the Senate with broad bipartisan support. The Senate vote - 93 for and 2 against - sets the stage for a vote later this week or next week on passage of the legislation by the Senate. President Barack Obama said in his State of the Union that if Congress brought him a bill banning insider trading by lawmakers he'd sign it "tomorrow." The move comes after Republican leaders in the House in December delayed legislative efforts to bring to a vote similar legislation seeking to hike limits on insider trading by lawmakers. However, the House expects to vote on insider trading legislation by the end of February, a Republican aide said. The vote comes after a recent report on CBS's "60 Minutes" that highlighted details about alleged insider trading by lawmakers. That report was inspired by "Throw Them all Out," a book published in November.
