WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech next week will contain "new ideas" while continuing the theme that investments are needed to strengthen the middle-class, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Friday. "The president's view on this is...we need to, as a country, ensure we are the most powerful economy, the most innovative, and sophisticated. For the job-creating engine that this economy needs to be, we need to make some very important investments in education and infrastructure and research and development," Carney said. The White House spokesman disagreed with the conventional wisdom that few pieces of legislation will pass the divided Congress until after the November election. "We believe there is opportunity...to achieve things this year, Republicans and Democrats working in a bipartisan way," Carney said, noting that President Bill Clinton and Republicans worked together in 1996.
