NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDSTO MEET JAN. 19-20 IN ROCKVILLE, MD.; 2012 LEADERSHIP AND MEETING SCHEDULEThe Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards(ACRS) will hold a public meeting Jan. 19-20, 2012, in Rockville, Md., to discuss several issuesof current interest. Topics include:• Turkey Point Units 3 and 4 extended power uprate application;• Proposed Revision to 10 CFR 50.46, “Acceptance Criteria for Emergency CoreCooling Systems for Light-Water Nuclear Power Reactors;”• Draft Final Report on the Biennial ACRS Review of the NRC Safety ResearchProgram; and • Augmented Inspection Team Report on North Anna.The ACRS advises the Commission, independently from the NRC staff, on safety issuesrelated to the licensing and operation of nuclear power plants, as well as those issues in the areasof health physics and radiation protection. The meeting will be held in Room T-2B1 of the agency’s Two White Flint North building, at 11545 Rockville Pike. Sessions on Thursday, Jan. 19, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; sessions on Friday, Jan. 20, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Portions of the meetingsmay be closed to discuss proprietary information as well as organizational and personnel matters.In other business, the ACRS has elected Dr. J. Sam Armijo, John W. Stetkar and Harold B. Ray to leadership positions on the Committee. Dr. Armijo formerly served as the vice-chairman and now serves as the chairman of the ACRS. He is internationally recognized as a technical expert in nuclear fuels, plant materials,water chemistry and advanced nuclear power systems. Dr. Armijo retired in 1999 from GeneralElectric Nuclear Energy, where he worked as general manager of the Nuclear Fuel Business andas chief technologist. Dr. Armijo holds a doctorate in material science from Stanford University. John W. Stetkar formerly served as member-at-large and now serves as the vice-chairmanof the ACRS. Stetkar has more than 30 years of experience as an engineering consultant. He isan internationally recognized expert in the fields of risk assessment and reliability analysis.Stetkar holds a B.S. in electrical engineering and a M.S. in nuclear and environmentalengineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Harold B. Ray is the newly elected member-at-large. His career at Southern California Edison spanned more than 36 years. Ray served as the chief nuclear officer responsible for allnuclear facilities and programs and for all power-generating facilities. Ray earned his B.S. inmechanical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his M.S. fromCalifornia Institute of Technology. He also earned a M.S. in management from ClaremontGraduate School. A complete roster of the members and a complete agenda is available on the NRC’swebsite.
