from Senate Democrats by sarahThe passage of a two-month payroll tax cut extension this morning marked a victory for Americans across the country, who have urged Congress to do everything possible to prevent a tax hike on cash-strapped workers nationwide.

In passing the tax break, the Senate ensured the average American worker will not face a tax hike of $1,000 on January 1st. While Democratic senators wanted to extend the tax cut for a full year, Republicans said they would only agree to a full-year tax cut if Democrats agreed to Medicare cuts. Democratic negotiators opposed these cuts.
