ATOMIC SAFETY & LICENSING BOARD TO HOLD ORAL ARGUMENTS DEC. 20ON PROPOSED URANIUM RECOVERY SITE IN WYOMINGThe Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Atomic Safety and Licensing Board (ASLB) will hold oral arguments Dec. 20 at agency headquarters in Rockville, Md., on petitioners’ standingto intervene and the admissibility of contentions challenging the proposed Ross in situ leachuranium recovery project in Crook County, Wyo.Strata Energy, Inc., filed its application to construct and operate the Ross facility on Jan. 6. The NRC completed its initial adequacy review and docketed the application on June 28. TheNatural Resources Defense Council and the Powder River Basin Resource Council jointlypetitioned for a hearing, raising several environmental contentions about the application.The ASLB’s pre-hearing conference will begin at 9 a.m. EST Dec. 20, in the ASLBHearing Room, T-3B45 in the Two White Flint North Building at NRC headquarters, 11555 Rockville Pike in Rockville. (Visitors must enter through the One White Flint North Building.)During the session, the ASLB and the participants will discuss whether the petitioners havestanding to raise their concerns, and whether their contentions meet the criteria for admissibilityin a hearing.The session will be viewable via a webcast.In addition to the oral arguments by the petitioners, Strata and the NRC staff, the ASLBis accepting written “limited appearance” statements from members of the public who are notpetitioners but may have concerns relating to the issues in the proceeding. These written statements may be mailed to the Office of the Secretary, Rulemakings and Adjudications Staff,U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, D.C., 20555-0001, or by e-mail tohearingdocket@nrc.gov.
