NRC SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENTFOR LEE NUCLEAR STATION NEW REACTORS; MEETINGS SCHEDULED JAN. 19The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff is seeking public comments on its preliminaryfinding that there are no environmental impacts that would preclude issuing Combined Licenses(COL) for two new reactors at the Lee site near Gaffney, S.C.Staff from the NRC and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District, willdiscuss the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) in meetings from 1-4 p.m. and 7-10 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Restoration Church International, 1905 N. Limestone St. inGaffney. The NRC will transcribe the meetings and post the transcript on the agency’s website. NRC staff will also be available for informal discussions on the agency’s licensing process with members of the public during “open house” sessions from noon-1 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. No formalcomments on the DEIS will be accepted during these open houses.Duke Energy submitted its new reactor application on Dec. 12, 2007, requesting licensesto build and operate two AP1000 reactors at the Lee site, approximately 25 miles northeast ofSpartanburg, S.C. Westinghouse submitted an application to amend the already-certifiedAP1000, an 1,100-megawatt electric design, on May 26, 2007. More information on the AP1000 amendment review is available on the NRC website.The DEIS is available on the agency’s website as well as the NRC’s electronic documentdatabase, ADAMS, by entering accession number ML113430094 in the ADAMS search engine. In addition, the Cherokee County Public Library, at 300 E.
