NRC MEETS PERFORMANCE GOALS;ISSUES FY 2011 PERFORMANCE AND ACCOUNTABILITY REPORTThe Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued its Performance and AccountabilityReport (PAR) for Fiscal Year 2011, demonstrating the agency’s effectiveness and efficiency inachieving its mission to protect public health and safety and the environment. The NRCsuccessfully met its two strategic safety and security goals and met all of its safety performancemeasure targets and all but one of its security performance measure targets for regulating the nuclear industry. The NRC PAR describes the agency’s program and financial performance from Oct. 1, 2010, through Sept. 30, 2011.“I am proud of the performance of NRC employees in achieving the agency’s safety and security goals while continuing to prudently manage the resources entrusted to us by the American people,” said Chairman Gregory B. Jaczko. The NRC continued to maintain effective and efficient oversight of the nation’s104 nuclear power reactors that continue to operate safely, meeting all six of the agency’sperformance measures in the safety arena. The agency also remained focused on the safe and secure use of nuclear materials through effective oversight of fuel facilities, uranium recoverysites, decommissioning sites and nuclear material users. The NRC’s activities were a significant factor in preventing the occurrence of nuclear reactor accidents, inadvertent criticality events, acute radiation exposures resulting in fatalities, releases of radioactive materials resulting in significant radiation exposures, and releases of radioactive materials that cause significant adverse environmental effects. The NRC met its objectives despite the additional challenges of responding to theFukushima Dai-ichi nuclear accident in Japan, the Midwest floods, the Virginia earthquake and Hurricane Irene, as well as the intense Congressional and public attention these events focused on nuclear safety issues. In the security arena, NRC’s activities were instrumental in preventing any domestic use of radioactive materials in a manner hostile to the security of the United States. The NRC met its security goal, and achieved all but one of its five performance measure targets. There was oneunrecovered loss or theft of a risk-significant radioactive source (a stolen radiography camera), which exceeded the target of zero.NRC NEWSU.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSIONOffice of Public AffairsTelephone: 301/415-8200Washington, D.C. 20555-0001E-mail: opa.resource@nrc.gov Site: www.nrc.govBlog: http://public-blog.nrc-gateway.govNo. 11-213November 16, 2011
