NRC SCHEDULES CONFERENCE WITH PROGRESS ENERGYTO DISCUSS CRYSTAL RIVER NUCLEAR PLANT EMERGENCY PLAN ISSUEThe U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a meeting in Atlanta on Nov. 7 to discuss with officials of Progress Energy, operators of the Crystal River nuclear plant, an inspection finding related to the company’s emergency action classifications for the plant. The plant is located near Crystal River, Fla., about 80 miles north of Tampa. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. EST at the NRC Region II office, 245 Peachtree Center Avenue in Atlanta. The meeting will be open to observation by the public, and after its conclusion, NRC officials will be available to answer questions. Members of the public interested in attending the meeting or participating by toll-free audio teleconferencing should contact the NRC’s Brian Bonser at 404-997-4653 or brian.bonser@nrc.gov.The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the significance of a preliminary “White”finding related to Crystal River plant radiation monitors that were unable to provide accurateinformation for plant officials to make emergency classification decisions. A "White" findingmeans the issue is considered to have a low to moderate impact on plant safety. No decision on NRC actions will be made at the meeting. NRC officials will reviewinformation presented by Progress Energy at the meeting and reach a later decision on appropriate regulatory action. The meeting notice and an inspection report with more information on the issue areavailable through the Region II office or in ADAMS via the NRC website. The number to access the inspection report is ML110610641.###
