Obama moves to stem medicine shortages
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- President Barack Obama will issue an executive order on Monday instructing the Food and Drug Administration to take steps to try to stem future shortages of cancer medicine and other drugs, according to numerous press reports. Obama's order will ask the FDA to increase reporting of possible shortages and to fast-track applications from drug manufacturers seeking to alter production. The move is part of a White House effort to highlight steps that Obama can take to help the economy while Congress remains in gridlock. Lawmakers have not completed work on legislation to address drug shortages that was introduced last winter.
