St. Louis wins Game 7 to capture 11th World Series
CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- The St. Louis Cardinals downed the Texas Rangers 6-2 in Friday night's Game 7 to win their 11th World Series title in 18 appearances. The home Cardinals, who'd made the playoffs as the National League's wild card, came back from an early 2-0 deficit to take the lead on an Allen Craig home run in the third inning. Working on three days' rest, right-hander Chris Carpenter went six innings to earn his second victory of the Series, exiting with a 5-2 lead. Left-handed Rangers starter Matt Harrison took his second Series loss. American League West champion Texas, whose two Fall Classic appearances have come in consecutive seasons, was twice within a single strike of victory in Thursday's 11-inning epic. Cardinals third baseman David Freese, whose walk-off home run decided Game 6, established a record for most runs batted in during a single postseason with 21. He was named the most valuable player of the Series. The Rangers became the 12th team to lose back-to-back World Series. (Updates to include MVP selection.)
