NRC SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENTFOR FERMI NEW REACTOR; MEETINGS SCHEDULED DEC. 15The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff is seeking public comments on its preliminaryfinding that there are no environmental impacts that would preclude issuing a Combined License(COL) for a new reactor at the Fermi site near Newport, Mich.Staff from the NRC will discuss their Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) in meetings from 1-4 p.m. and 7-10 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Monroe County CommunityCollege, La-Z Boy Center Meyer Theater, 1555 S. Raisinville Road in Monroe, Mich. The NRCwill transcribe the meetings and post the transcript on the agency’s website. NRC staff will also beavailable for informal discussions with members of the public during “open house” sessions from noon-1 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. No formal comments on the DEIS will be accepted during these open houses.The DEIS is available on the agency’s website as well as the NRC’s electronic documentdatabase, ADAMS, by entering accession numbers ML11287A108 and ML11287A109 in theADAMS search engine. In addition, the Ellis Reference & Information Center, Monroe CountyLibrary System, at 3700 S. Custer Road in Monroe, will have a hardbound copy of the DEISavailable for public inspection.Detroit Edison submitted its new reactor application on Sept. 18, 2008, requesting a licenseto build and operate an Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) at the Fermi site, adjacent to the company’s existing reactor approximately 25 miles northeast of Toledo, Ohio. General Electric-Hitachi Nuclear Energy submitted an application to certify the ESBWR, a 1,600-megawatt electric design, on Aug. 24, 2005. More information on the ESBWR certificationamendment review is available on the NRC website.Those wishing to register in advance to present their comments at the meeting, or withspecial needs for attending or presenting information at the meeting, should contact Bruce Olson bytelephone at 800-368-5642 x3731, or via e-mail at Fermi3.COLEIS@nrc.gov by Dec. 8. Thosewishing to speak may also register at the meetings no later than 12:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., respectively.
