NRC SCHEDULES ENFORCEMENT CONFERENCE WITH GLOBAL NUCLEAR FUEL FOR SEPT. 29
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a pre-decisional enforcementconference with officials of Global Nuclear Fuel of Wilmington, N.C. for Thursday, Sept. 29 to discuss apparent violations of NRC requirements related to the company’s failure to maintainadequate controls over the amount of radioactive material in one area of the facility.The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. EDT at the NRC Region II office in Atlanta, located at 245 Peachtree Center Ave. The meeting will be open to the public and NRC officials will beavailable after the meeting to answer any questions. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss apparent violations associated with the failure to maintain mass control within the uranium dioxide or UO2 sinter test grinding station high efficiencyparticulate air filter or HEPA filter housing. In early March, Global officials told the NRC that the company had discovered more uranium than allowed in that area and had taken steps to remove it. No decision on enforcement action will be made at the meeting.
