NRC NAMES NEW SENIOR RESIDENT INSPECTOR ATSUMMER NUCLEAR POW

NRC NAMES NEW SENIOR RESIDENT INSPECTOR ATSUMMER NUCLEAR POWER PLANTNuclear Regulatory Commission officials in Atlanta have selected James Reece as the senior resident inspector for SCE&G’s Summer nuclear power plant, located near Jenkinsville, S.C., about 26 miles northwest of Columbia. Reece joins resident inspector Ellery Coffman at the Summer site.Reece joined the NRC in 2001 as a project engineer in the NRC’s Region II office in Atlanta and was assigned to the Watts Bar nuclear plant in Tennessee as the resident inspector later that year. During his tenure at Watts Bar, he also served briefly as acting senior resident inspector at both the Watts Bar and Summer plants. Reece became the senior resident inspector at the North Anna plant in Virginia in 2005. Reece has more than 30 years experience in nuclear powerincluding 20 years of utility experience in multiple engineering, maintenance and operations positions at Duke Energy’s Oconee and Catawba plants in South Carolina as well as Duke’scorporate offices in Charlotte. Reece received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Auburn University in 1981. He also held a senior reactor operator’s license at the Catawba nuclear plant from May 1989 until he joined the NRC. “Jim Reece has the experience and commitment to carry out the NRC mission of protectingpeople and the environment by helping to ensure the safety of the Summer plant,” said NRC RegionII Administrator Victor McCree. At least two NRC resident inspectors are assigned to each U.S. commercial nuclear plant. They serve as the agency's eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring majorwork projects and interacting with plant workers and the public. Resident inspectors can serve at one site for up to seven years. The Summer resident inspectors can be reached at 803-345-5683. ###
