U.S. stocks extend gains after economic data
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks added to gains after the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond said its manufacturing index slid in August from July, and the Commerce Department said U.S. sales of new homes fell in July. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 126 points to 10,980.74. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index climbed 14.96 points to 1,138.78. The Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 40.52 points to 2,385.90.
