NRC SCHEDULES MEETING IN HARTSVILLE TO DISCUSSROBINSON NUCLEAR POWER PLANTThe Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a regulatory performance meetingwith Progress Energy on Thursday, Aug. 25, in Hartsville, S.C. to discuss corrective actions associated with a “white” performance indicator and three “white” inspection findings at theRobinson nuclear power plant located near Hartsville, about 26 miles northwest of Florence. NRC and Progress Energy officials will discuss what the company has done to address the performance indicator for unplanned shutdowns, which crossed the threshold for white in the third quarter of 2010. The discussion will also cover corrective actions for issues related to an emergencydiesel generator breaker, operator training objectives and the failure to implement some procedures during a plant shutdown in March 2010. The NRC evaluates regulatory performance at commercial nuclear power plants with acolor-coded system which classifies findings as green, white, yellow or red, in increasing order ofsafety significance. The NRC staff increases its level of oversight and inspection based on that significance and expects the plant’s operator to take appropriate corrective actions to address thecauses and any underlying issues. The NRC staff completed two inspections of the identified issues and corrective actions at the Robinson plant earlier this year and determined that the company’s corrective actions wereappropriate. The meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT in the Hartsville Public Library, 147 W. CollegeAvenue in Hartsville. The meeting is open to the public and those attending will have an opportunity to talk with NRC officials after the business portion of the meeting. Persons wishing toparticipate in this meeting by toll-free audio teleconference should contact the NRC’s Randy Musserat 404-997-4603 or Randy Musser prior to the day of the meeting. ###
