Democrats Committed to Long-term, Balanced Compromise to Pay America's Bills, Reduce the Deficit, Bring Certainty to Our Economy

MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
This week, I was disappointed that House Republicans wasted time on a short-term proposal that only kicks the debt limit problem down the road, and which they knew would fail in the Senate. Democrats were united in our opposition to this proposal that didn’t solve the problem and didn’t give businesses and the markets the certainty they need. We continue to call for a compromise on a long-term, balanced agreement to pay America’s bills and reduce the deficit.
That’s why it was disappointing today that Republicans voted on Majority Leader Reid’s proposal to pay our bills, before the Senate even had a chance to act in a bipartisan way on it. Republicans set it up so that it would fail, continuing to play political games instead of working with Democrats on a compromise. We don’t have time for these games, we are running out of time to ensure we pay our nation’s bills. Defaulting on our obligations would have a severe impact on Americans at a time when our economy is still recovering. Democrats are working to prevent that from happening. I hope that Republicans will abandon their political games and work with us to take action quickly so that we can pay our nation’s bills, reduce our deficit, create certainty for our economy and protect the middle class, seniors and the most vulnerable among us.
Sincerely yours,

STENY H. HOYER
