Sustainable Urban Housing: Collaborating for Livable and Inclusive Cities Learning Summit and Award Ceremony

Media Note
Washington, DC

July 18, 2011

Acting Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta Jacobson will deliver remarks at the award ceremony for the “Sustainable Urban Housing: Collaborating for Livable and Inclusive Cities” global competition learning summit. The award ceremony will take place Tuesday, July 19 at 5:15 p.m. at the National Building Museum, 401 F Street, NW, Washington, D.C.
Under the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA), the Government of Brazil joined the United States government and other U.S. organizations in carrying out the Sustainable Urban Planning Initiative. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), along with Ashoka Changemakers Foundation, the American Planning Association, and the Rockefeller Foundation, launched the global competition last year.
Eleven proposals reached the final phase with innovative solutions for providing sustainable, energy efficient housing in a way that unleashes economic opportunities for the urban poor and builds smarter, cleaner cities around the world. Eight of the finalists and the three winners are from the Western Hemisphere. The winners, from Argentina, Brazil, and the United States, were chosen through global public voting and will receive $10,000 from Ashoka Changemakers to scale-up their projects. Winners and finalists will participate in the award ceremony.
This event is open to the press. Media representatives should register for the event at http://www.huduser.org/portal/SIHPI/index.html or by contacting Stacey Williams at the American Planning Association.
