Hoyer Statement on Biden Debt Limit Talks

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Biden debt limit talks:
"We must keep moving forward with talks so that we can quickly take action to reach a balanced deal that reduces our deficit, includes spending cuts and revenues, and ensures that we pay America’s bills.
"The fiscal and economic crisis that confronts us demands thoughtful, responsible, and yes, even courageous action by Republicans and Democrats. We owe that to our children and our fellow citizens. We must work together to not only reduce our deficits and cumulative debt, but also to ensure that America does not default on paying its bills.
“None of us, Member of Congress or citizen, can or should wash our hands of the responsibility for our present fiscal position. But, blame is not the solution. Principled and patriotic cooperation is. The decisions we must make are going to be hard, but failure to act will put our country’s well-being and that of each of us at risk. The Biden group has been working diligently and conscientiously. We must continue to work until compromise and action are accomplished.
“Now it is time for both parties to move past ideology and partisanship in order to compromise. It is clear that ideological solutions--those focused only on cutting spending or raising revenue--will fail to meet the magnitude of our fiscal challenge."
