Hong Kong shares extend gains, with utilities up
HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Hong Kong shares advanced early Tuesday after rising in eight of the last nine sessions, spurred by gains in financial, power utility and resource stocks. The Hang Seng Index rose 0.9% to 23,385.58 and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index added 0.8% to 13,112.45. An advance on mainland Chinese bourses after the Shanghai Composite fell for an eighth straight session Monday helped support investor sentiment. Cnooc Ltd. rose 1.5% and China Life Insurance Co. gained 1.1%. Power utilities got a boost from Beijing's decision to increase power tariffs modestly in several mainland provinces; Huadian Power International Corp. climbed 2.9% and Huaneng Power International Inc. rose 2%. The Shanghai Composite Index , meanwhile, rose 0.4% to 2,716.61.
