On Wednesday, May 4, the Department of State will host the eighth annual Global Classrooms D.C. (GCDC) Model United Nations Conference. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ann Stock will deliver the keynote address at the conference’s opening ceremony.
More than 600 middle and high school students from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area will participate in the daylong program. Through GCDC, middle and high school students and teachers in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area participate in year-round activities to help them understand the UN system, increase their knowledge of other cultures and traditions, improve their ability to think analytically and creatively, and tackle global problems collectively.
State Department volunteers work with many of the participating schools during the year to support those activities. The May 4 event is the culmination of the year’s preparations, and includes simulated member state presentations, negotiations on draft resolutions, etc. You can learn more about this unique program at http://www.unausa.org/gcdcmun/.
