Hoyer Statement on the One-Year Anniversary of BP Oil Spill
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the one-year anniversary of the BP oil spill:
“One year ago today, the explosion at the Deepwater Horizon Oil rig tragically took the lives of 11 people and touched off what would become the largest oil spill in our nation’s history. One year later, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and with all of those whose livelihoods have been affected in the Gulf Coast. We also reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that a tragedy of this magnitude never happens again and to holding those responsible fully accountable for their actions.
“In response to the spill, Democrats have put forward a broad range of responses, including restructuring regulatory agencies, conducting aggressive safety oversight and commissioning a Blue Ribbon panel to learn the lessons of this tragedy and prevent future spills from happening. But there is more work to be done to ensure the safety of our workers and our environment. The Gulf Coast’s workers and families have paid a heavy price for the oil spill, and we must remain committed to aiding in the region's economic and ecological recovery.”
