Statement by Ambassador Susan E. Rice, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Announcing a $3 Million Contribution to the UN Security Council's 1540 Committee
Susan E. Rice
U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations
U.S. Mission to the United Nations
New York, NY
March 31, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The United States is pleased to announce that we intend to contribute an additional $3 million to the critical work of the 1540 Committee. Preventing the spread and use of weapons of mass destruction is an enormous security challenge, and there is no more urgent threat to the United States than the potential of terrorists armed with these dangerous weapons. The UN Security Council’s 1540 Committee is a key part of the global non-proliferation and counter-terrorism regime and sets important international standards for all states regarding the establishment of controls on weapons of mass destruction and the means to produce and deliver them.
We commend other countries that have contributed to the 1540 Committee and we encourage the entire international community to continue to support it, financially and politically.
