Launched in March 2010 as a part of the Nationwide Health Information Network, the Direct Project was created to specify a secure, scalable, and standards-based way for participants to easily send authenticated, encrypted health information directly to known, trusted recipients over the Internet. The White House and ONC announced that two pilot programs, one in Minnesota and another in Rhode Island, have begun using Direct Project-based information exchange.
