Office of the Comptroller of the Currency Provides Consumer Information at
National Consumer Protection Week Event on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON — The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency promoted awareness of consumer protection resources during today’s National Consumer Protection Week event on Capitol Hill.

"National Consumer Protection Week helps reinforce the importance of consumer information. Informed consumers are better able to protect themselves against unfair, deceptive and fraudulent practices," Acting Comptroller of the Currency John Walsh said. "The OCC’s HelpWithMyBank.gov Web site provides consumers a wealth of information to help them better understand the banking system and make informed financial decisions."

To support this year’s consumer protection theme, "Your Information Destination," the OCC joined the Federal Trade Commission and other federal agencies on Capitol Hill to distribute information about alternatives to refund anticipation loans, reverse mortgages, cashier’s checks, and how to get assistance through the OCC’s Customer Assistance Group. The OCC also highlighted the agency’s consumer Web site HelpWithMyBank.gov that provides answers to more than 250 common questions received through the thousands of calls made to the Customer Assistance Group. OCC materials, in English and Spanish, are also available at the NCPW Web site http://www.ncpw.gov.

The OCC continues to publish its Consumer Advisory sheets that cover a range of consumer issues. Recent editions include "Consumer Alternatives for Receiving Income Tax Refunds," and "Reverse Mortgages: Are They For You?"

The OCC’s Customer Assistance Group is available to help national bank customers with questions about HelpWithMyBank.gov or the complaint process, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Eastern, Monday – Friday, at 1-800-613-6743.
