When Republicans took the House majority, they pledged to create jobs and immediately start cutting the deficit. But they still haven’t put forward a real agenda to create jobs or to address the deficit in a serious way. A look at the past two months shows Republicans have failed to address Americans’ top priorities:

REPUBLICAN REPORT CARD
February 2011

ON JOB CREATION
Republicans have not brought a single jobs bill to the House Floor and the Republican Spending Bill will cost the country 800,000 private and public sector jobs, according to EPI, and could reduce economic growth by 1.5 to 2 percentage points according to a Goldman Sachs analysis.

ON FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
Republicans have not offered a serious plan to address the deficit and their policies pave the way to add $5 trillion to the deficit.

ON IMPROVING HEALTH CARE FOR AMERICANS
The Republican Patient’s Rights Repeal bill and amendments to the Republican Spending Bill take new health care freedoms away from families and small businesses and put insurance companies back in control.

ON EDUCATION
The Republican Spending Bill cuts investments in building a competitive workforce by kicking more than 200,000 children out of Head Start, reducing maximum Pell Grant amounts by $845, reducing funding for over 2,000 elementary and secondary schools and laying off 7,000 special education teachers and staff.

ON RESEARCH AND INNOVATION
The Republican Spending Bill cuts investments in innovation that keep the U.S. the world leader in cutting edge fields, including cutting 20,000 researchers at the National Science Foundation and billions in science, energy and health research.

ON INFRASTRUCTURE
The Republican Spending Bill cuts investments in infrastructure that help businesses grow and compete, including $2.5 billion for high-speed rail projects, $234 million to improve air traffic control and 25,000 construction jobs and 76 projects in 40 states. Their cuts to surface transportation projects costs 300,000 private sector jobs.

ON THE CLEAN ENERGY ECONOMY
The Republican Spending Bill cuts critical investments in clean energy research that will help create jobs in the clean energy economy.
ON NATIONAL SECURITYFThe Republican Spending Bill compromises national security by cutting nearly $600 million for border security—reducing personnel, fencing, infrastructure and technology at a time when border violence is on the rise.
