MESSAGE FROM THE Democratic whip
This week House Republicans passed a “budgetless” resolution, a one-page bill that was intended to lay out their intention to cut spending this fiscal year. In fact, the bill had no numbers or specifics in it, and it also broke their promise in the Pledge to America to cut spending by $100 billion this year. This continues Republicans' pattern of breaking their pledge to reduce the deficit immediately: in their bill setting forward the rules of the House of Representatives, Rublicans paved the way to allow adding $5 trillion to the deficit; that was followed by their vote to add $230 billion to the deficit by repealing the health care law. While Democrats are committed to fiscal responsibility, Republicans seem to have abandoned their promise to put forth a serious plan to reduce the deficit.
On Tuesday, President Obama addressed the nation with his State of the Union speech. I am hopeful that Congress will heed his call to find common ground on America’s challenges—creating jobs, restoring fiscal balance and strengthening the middle class. President Obama’s vision encompasses the Democrats’ “Make It In America” agenda, a plan to restore American manufacturing and to make investments that lift the middle class so that they can succeed. I look forward to working with Members on both sides of the aisle as we pursue this agenda to create well-paying middle class jobs and to also take on the challenge of reducing the deficit in a substantial way.
